Der Wattwurm (Arenicola marina), auch (Sand-)Pierwurm oder Prielwurm genann. Durch seine Lebensweise im Sand des Watts ist er ein wichtiger Bestandteil im Ökosystem des Wattenmeers. Er zählt er zu den bekanntesten Tieren des Watts, was insbesondere an seinen allgegenwärtig scheinenden charakteristischen Kothaufen im Watt liegt. Der rotbraune Wurm wird etwa 20 bis 40 cm lang und ist in der vorderen Hälfte etwa fingerdick. Wattwürmer wiegen ca. 40 - 50 Gramm.

The lugworm or sandworm (Arenicola marina) is a large marine worm of the phylum Annelida. It is an important part of the ecosystem of the Wadden Sea. Its coiled castings are a familiar sight on a beach at low tide but the animal itself is rarely seen. When fully grown, the lugworm of the coasts of Europe is 20 to 40 cm long, thick as a finger and weights 40-50 gram.
